Faces of My Small Homeland

A documentary portrait project by Tanya Ward — Tatyana Petrova (Ward)

Exhibition dates: 24 October–7 November 2026.

Moscow House of Nationalities. Address: 4 Novaya Basmannaya Street, Building 1, Moscow, Russia.

Exhibition organiser: РОО “Пермяцкое землячество” (Permyak Community Association).

People. Memory. Home.

These are the people of the place where I grew up: Pelym and the wider Komi-Permyak region. Their portraits and personal stories preserve memories of people, their homeland and their culture. The project marks the centenary of the Kochevsky District, my home district where I was born and grew up.

I photograph people at home and outdoors, in familiar surroundings. Conversation, observation and attention to each person guide the work. Each portrait is accompanied by a personal story.

My father was a projectionist and a local photographer. As a child, I helped him print photographs; later I joined the school photography club. After more than twenty years as a television presenter and journalist, I made photography my profession while living in England. This project brings me back to the people and places where that story began.
